004 - Chasing the Infinite: Wolfpack's Ultimate Dark Sky Destination Bucket List

You know that saying "The Mountains are Calling, and I must go"? Well, we definitely love moutains, but what we love even more is STARS. There is a tangible peace that only exists under a truly dark sky. For those of us living in urban North Texas—trapped under the persistent orange glow of city lights —that experience feels like a luxury that's painfully out of reach. But for the dreamers and the explorers like us who find their rhythm outside city limits, the night sky isn’t just a backdrop; it’s a destination to which we are bound.

At Wolfpack Wedding Co., we’ve made it our mission to do more than just document a wedding day. We've decided to facilitate an encounter with the Infinite. (A fun side-note - to focus our lenses on the stars or moon, we have to manually focus them to the "infinity" marker on our lenses' distance scale). Our Stargazing Experience is an intentional expedition—a hybrid journey of guided astronomy and fine-art environmental portraits where we utilize celestial-tracking robotics and long exposures to capture what our naked eyes cannot see.

Heather and I are constantly scouting the most pristine "islands of darkness" in the country. The "Backyard" Gems: Texas & Oklahoma

You don’t always have to travel across the globe to find the edge of the universe. Some of the most profound spots are hidden right here in the Southern Central Plains.

McGee Creek State Park, OK: Our "home" dark sky - our proverbial base camp. Only 90 minutes from Denison, it’s our go-to for scouting new celestial targets away from our Grayson County light pollution. The stillness of the lake provides a perfect mirror for the Milky Way. Explore McGee Creek.

Black Mesa State Park, OK: As of late 2025, Black Mesa has been officially crowned Oklahoma’s first International Dark Sky Park. Located in the remote tip of the Panhandle, it offers true Bortle 1 skies—the darkest possible rating. With the "black lava" mesas providing a dramatic, prehistoric silhouette, it is a landscape where you can truly feel the curvature of the Earth as you track the stars. Big Bend National Park, TX: Often called the "Gold Standard" of dark skies. Here, the sheer scale of the Chisos Mountains silhouetted against a Bortle 1 sky is enough to take your breath away. It is a place of profound isolation and ancient beauty. Big Bend Dark Skies.

The Texas Canyonlands: Palo Duro Canyon, Caprock Canyons, and High Plains gems like Copper Breaks State Park offer a rugged, red-rock aesthetic. The contrast of the crimson earth against the deep indigo of the sky creates a fine-art palette that is unmatched for portraits. We've visited all 3, and highly recommend lodging at the Hideout at Palo Duro Canyon | Buffalo Lodge - we've stayed twice (Honeymoon Grand Finale and 1st Anniversary) and can't wait to return! High Altitudes & Desert Oases: New Mexico & Colorado

Thin air makes for clear views, there's less dust to peer through. When we head up the mountains, the atmosphere drops away, leaving nothing but interstellar distance between our lenses, your eyes, and the stars.

Rocky Mountain National Park, CO: A place dear to our hearts. Cosmic Campground, NM: Located in the Gila National Forest, this is one of only a handful of International Dark Sky Sanctuaries in the world. It is designed specifically for those who want to look deeper.

Westcliffe & Silver Cliff, CO: A charming mountain community that has committed to "lighting the way" by keeping the ground dark. The Sangre de Cristo Mountains provide a jagged, snow-capped horizon that frames the galactic core perfectly.

The Hidden Emerald: Arkansas

The Ouachita Mountains and the Buffalo National River offer a different kind of dark sky—one framed by lush forests and limestone bluffs.

Buffalo National River: As an International Dark Sky Park, the river provides a winding, natural path through some of the darkest territory in the Mid-South.

The Great Western Frontier: Utah, Arizona, & The PNW

For the ultimate adventure, we look toward the "Grand Circle" and the wild coastlines of the Pacific NorthWest.

The Utah "Mighty Five": Places like Arches, Canyonlands, and Natural Bridges are world-renowned. The stone arches act as natural portals, framing the center of our galaxy in a way that feels intentional, almost architectural.

The Oregon Outback: Recently designated as a massive Dark Sky Sanctuary, the Oregon Outback is for the couple who wants to truly disappear into the landscape.

Goldendale Observatory, WA: A hub for astronomy in the Pacific Northwest, where the air is crisp and the "seeing" is exceptionally stable for our tracked deep-space photography.

Why We Scout

A Stargazing Experience isn't just about clicking a shutter. It’s about the four-hour window where the world slows down. While our Nomad Star Tracker-mounted camera or new DwarfMini Smart Telescope are busy countering Earth's rotation to capture the faint glow of the Orion Nebula or the Andromeda Galaxy, we are reminiscing the ancient mythology of the stars and creating portraits that you can take home and hang on your walls.

We scout these locations using tools like Light Pollution Maps and Clear Dark Sky Charts to ensure that when we invite you to join us, the conditions are nothing short of spectacular, and use apps like Stellarium, SkyGuide, and PhotoPills to plan shots days and months ahead.
